Introduction

The challenges associated with conventional tourism has occasioned more sustainable forms of tourism including community-based tourism (CBT). CBT has been defined as "tourism that takes environmental, social and cultural sustainability into account. It is managed and owned by the community, for the community, with the purpose of enabling visitors to increase their awareness and learn about the community and local ways of life" (Suansri, 2003, p.14). There has been a proliferation of CBT projects around the world over the years, probably due to the fact that it is seen as an attractive model for achieving socio-economic development of tourist destinations. Among the benefits of CBT are the improvement of rural economies, empowerment of the local community and poverty alleviation. In as much as CBT has been promoted as being more beneficial to local communities, its implementation is not without challenges. According to Cole (2006) in many developing countries, community participation is constrained by institutional factors such as centralised decision-making processes, an unwillingness by tourism planners to include destination residents in decision-making, and a lack of knowledge among host communities about ways in which they could participate. Tourism is one of the industries that has suffered the most from the COVID-19 pandemic. Travel has been seriously hampered by lockdowns, border closures, flight cancellations and other social distance measures. This includes travel to rural and indigenous communities. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, destination marketing organizations and managers of CBT projects have to adopt different marketing strategies including shifting to target new demographics in an effort to remain sustainable. Though issues relating to CBT have become topical in recent times, the experiences in different parts of the world have been different. The fortunes, challenges and impacts of CBT vary across different contexts, and this calls for a book that addresses the issues from different perspectives. This book will provide theoretical and empirical insights into the prospects and challenges associated with CBT from a multidisciplinary global perspective. The book will critically examine issues of structure, impact, management, marketing, support, changing demographics, challenges, sustainability and implications for the future of CBT. Frameworks and methodologies employed in assessing CBT initiatives will also be examined.

Objective

The aim of this edited book is to provide theoretical and empirical insights into contemporary issues relating to CBT. It also seeks to highlight critical lessons and trends in CBT from both established and new community-based tourism initiatives to inform the design, management, marketing and sustainability of community-based tourism projects.
